Mosque in Bahrain (Juffair)
The Al Fateh Grand Mosque, or Ahmed Al Fateh Islamic Centre, is Bahrain's largest mosque, beside the Al Fateh Highway in Juffair, Manama. It covers some 6,500 square metres and holds over 7,000 worshippers at once. It was built by the late Emir of Bahrain, Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, in the late 1980s and named after Ahmed Al Fateh, founder of Al Khalifa rule in Bahrain. Its great dome, made entirely of fibreglass and weighing around sixty tonnes, is among the largest of its kind in the world. The floors are Italian marble, the chandeliers come from Austria, the doors are Indian teak, Kufic calligraphy runs throughout, and two minarets rise beside it. In 2006 the mosque became home to the National Library of Bahrain, and the centre's library holds about seven thousand books, some over a century old. It is one of Bahrain's most visited sights and welcomes visitors of all faiths on guided tours.
Free guided tours run in several languages, and photography is allowed. Modest dress is required; abayas and headscarves are available for women at the entrance, and shoes come off before entering. Visit outside prayer times and avoid Fridays. Allow an hour. Tour times vary, so ask at the entrance or check the centre's website.
