Bazaar of Manama, Bahrain
Manama Souq is the old bazaar of Bahrain's capital, in the north of the city between its old quarters and the central business district, east of Al Naim and west of Ras Rumman, with the historic Bab Al Bahrain as its main entrance. Around it lie the old neighbourhoods (fareej) of Manama, with narrow lanes and traditional houses. The souq is a network of small lanes packed with shops: gifts and souvenirs, fabrics, traditional clothing and tailors, spices, incense, perfume and oud, the famous Bahraini halwa, electronics, and the gold souq with dozens of jewellers selling gold and natural pearls, for which Bahrain was famed for centuries. Part of the souq was redeveloped into a pedestrian zone with a new wooden roof and cafés, opened to the public on 20 July 2013, while the older part keeps its streets for cars and pedestrians, so the souq mixes new design with the spirit of old Manama.
Evening is best, when shops reopen after the midday break. Start at Bab Al Bahrain and allow two hours. Gentle bargaining is normal in gift and fabric shops, while gold is priced by weight. Try Bahraini halwa and tea at a traditional café. Modest dress is appropriate.
