Alexandria, Egypt

Egyptian sports club
The Alexandria Sporting Club, known simply as Sporting, is one of the oldest clubs in Egypt and Africa, founded in 1890 by Prince Omar Toussoun with the British administration of the day. It gave its name to the whole district and the tram stop beside it. Nationalised after 1952, it now covers about 100 acres and has close to 100,000 members. Its heart is the large golf course and the old racecourse, framed by trees and early 20th-century buildings, a rare green lung among the apartment blocks of eastern Alexandria. In sport it is known for basketball and handball; its women's basketball team won the African club championship in 2022 and again in 2023. For visitors it is more a piece of modern Alexandria's memory than a sight to tour, seen from the surrounding streets and from the Raml tram that runs alongside.
It is a members' club; entry is normally as a member's guest or for events open to the public, so do not plan a visit without arranging it. The nicest way to see the area is to ride the old yellow Raml tram to Sporting stop and walk down to the corniche.
