Park in Doha, Qatar
Aspire Park, in the Aspire Zone in Baaya, south-west Doha, is the city's largest park at 88 hectares and a favourite for family picnics and outdoor gatherings. Wide lawns spread between rare and common trees, with fountains, children's playgrounds, a small hill, a café and Aspire Lake, the only lake in Qatar, complete with ducks. The park looks up at the Aspire Tower, the 300-metre spiral that held the giant flame of the 2006 Asian Games and is now a hotel; lit up at night, it is one of the area's best views. Around the park are major sports venues: Aspire Academy, the Aspire Dome, Khalifa International Stadium and the Villaggio mall. Public art dots the park, including Sarah Lucas's life-size bronze of a Shire horse pulling a cart loaded with two giant squashes. Running and walking tracks make it a meeting place for joggers morning and evening.
Late afternoon into evening is best, especially from October to April. Bring a mat to sit on the grass; it is very child-friendly and free. Combine it with Villaggio mall nearby, or the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum at Khalifa Stadium.
