Waterfront promenade in Doha, Qatar
The Doha Corniche is a waterfront promenade and dual carriageway running seven kilometres around crescent-shaped Doha Bay, from West Bay in the north to Al Khulaifat in the south, past Doha Port. Most of its shape dates from large land reclamation works in the late 1970s and 1980s that remade the city's shoreline, and it has become a symbol of Doha's modernisation. Today it is the most popular and lively place in Qatar: a continuous green ribbon of gardens, palms and paths where people walk and jog, and where Doha gathers for national occasions, above all the National Day parade on 18 December and National Sports Day. On one side rise the glittering towers of West Bay; on the other are the Museum of Islamic Art and its park, Souq Waqif and moored traditional boats. Along it, short trips on traditional wooden dhows head out into the bay, especially at sunset, and it is lined by the Museum of Islamic Art, Al Bidda Park and the Qatar National Theatre.
Walk from late afternoon into the night, when the towers light up; October to April is far more comfortable. Friday morning is almost empty. Cycling is not allowed on the promenade according to Wikivoyage. A sunset dhow trip is worth it; agree the price and length before boarding. Carry water in the hot months.
