Government building in Abu Dhabi
Qasr Al Watan, the Palace of the Nation, is the presidential palace of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi, beside Emirates Palace at the western end of the Corniche. It is a working, not residential, palace: the Federal Supreme Council and the Cabinet meet here and heads of state are received here. Completed in 2017, it opened to the public on 11 March 2019 to celebrate the nation's heritage, while still hosting official functions. It is a showpiece of contemporary Arab-Islamic architecture in white granite and limestone, crowned by a huge central dome and surrounded by gardens and fountains. Inside, the Great Hall under the dome is covered in intricate geometric decoration across walls and ceiling, with a giant chandelier, alongside the Banquet Hall and other ceremonial rooms. The palace presents aspects of governance and culture in the UAE: a hall of diplomatic gifts from world leaders, the Qasr Al Watan Library with thousands of books and manuscripts on the region's history and heritage, and exhibitions on the federation and its system of government. In the evening a light-and-sound show on the façade tells the story of the nation.
Allow two to three hours and book tickets ahead on the official website. Modest dress is required and bags go through security. A shuttle takes visitors from the visitor centre to the palace. Stay for the evening light show (check times), and combine the visit with Emirates Palace next door.
