Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Yas Island is an artificial island in Abu Dhabi, about 20 km from the city centre near the airport, built through extensive land reclamation and named after the Bani Yas tribe. It covers some 25 square kilometres and was developed from 2006 as a leisure and shopping destination, becoming one of the emirate's biggest tourism projects; in 2009 the World Travel Awards named it the world's leading tourism project. It is home to Yas Marina Circuit, host of the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2009, where visitors can walk or cycle the track on set evenings. Ferrari World, opened in 2010, has Formula Rossa, once the world's fastest roller coaster, and there are also Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld. The island also has Yas Mall, one of Abu Dhabi's biggest malls, the Yas Bay waterfront with its promenade and restaurants, Etihad Arena, many hotels, beaches and golf courses, a complete family destination that can fill several days.
Plan at least a full day per theme park, and look at combined tickets covering several parks. The parks are indoor and air-conditioned, but moving between them in summer is hot, so use the free shuttle buses around the island. The Yas Bay promenade is lovely in the evening. The island is on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai road, minutes from the airport.
