Museum in Cairo, Egypt
The 6th of October War Panorama is a museum and memorial to the October 1973 war, located in Heliopolis on Salah Salem Street next to Cairo International Stadium. The complex covers about 7.5 feddans (roughly 32,000 square metres), was built with the assistance of a group of North Korean architects, and was inaugurated on 5 October 1989. It is run by the Egyptian National Military Museums Department. The building is a cylindrical, fort-like structure with Islamic architectural motifs. Its centrepiece is a circular hall where visitors sit on a slowly rotating platform in front of a huge three-dimensional oil mural depicting the crossing of the Suez Canal, accompanied by a narrated soundtrack. A cinema hall screens documentary footage from the 1967 and 1973 wars. Outside, in the forecourt, aircraft, tanks and other military hardware used in the war are on open display, and visitors can get close to them for photographs, which makes the site popular with families.
Allow one to one and a half hours; the rotating show runs at set times during the day, so arrive with time to spare before a showing. The outdoor display is unshaded, so mornings or late afternoons are more comfortable in summer. The site is family-friendly and close to Cairo Stadium and the Stadium metro station (Line 3). Check opening times before visiting, as they can change on public and national holidays.
