Historic museum in Al-Madinah,Saudi Arabia
Al-Madinah Museum, founded in 1983, presents the heritage and history of Madinah from prehistoric times to the present day. It is one of the few non-religious sites that visitors to the city see, and a useful complement to the Prophet's Mosque and the sites of the Prophet's life. The museum holds around 2,000 rare artefacts that capture the heritage and culture of Madinah, along with varied archaeological collections, visual galleries and rare old photographs documenting the city, its people and its landscape and how they were shaped over the centuries. One of the most interesting sections traces the evolution of the Prophet's Mosque from a small building with the rooms of the Prophet's wives beside it, through the expansions of caliphs and sultans, to the vast complex of today. It suits families, students and anyone who wants to understand the historical setting of the city to which the Prophet migrated before exploring its landmarks.
Check visiting hours before you go and allow about an hour. Visiting early in your stay works best, as it gives context for the landmarks you will see afterwards. The museum is child-friendly and air-conditioned, making it a good choice for the midday heat between prayers.
