Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia
Quba Mosque is the first mosque built in Islam and the first in Madinah: if the Masjid al-Haram is the first house of worship established for humanity, Quba is the first mosque the Muslims themselves built. It stands in the south of Madinah, in the settlement where the Prophet Muhammad stayed on arriving from Makkah as an emigrant; he laid its first stone with his own hands and his companions completed the building. Today it is the largest mosque in the city after the Prophet's Mosque. Muslims cared for the mosque in every age. Uthman ibn Affan renewed it, then Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz in the reign of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik; Sultan Qaytbay enlarged it, followed by the Ottoman sultans Mahmud II and Abdulmejid I, until the great Saudi expansion whose foundation stone King Fahd laid in 1405 AH, completed in 1407 AH (1987), which gave the prayer hall 5,000 square metres, the whole complex 13,500 square metres and room for 20,000 worshippers. In Ramadan 1443 AH (2022) the King Salman project was launched for the largest expansion in its history, aiming at 50,000 square metres and 66,000 worshippers, with redevelopment of the surrounding district. The mosque has a special merit established in the Sunna. The Prophet said: "Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to Quba Mosque and prays in it, has the reward of an Umrah." Since Rabi' al-Thani 1440 AH (2018) its doors have been open all day.
Follow the Sunna: perform wudu where you are staying, then come to Quba and pray two rak'as for the reward of an Umrah. The mosque is open all day; after Fajr or between Asr and Maghrib are the pleasantest times. It is about five kilometres from the Prophet's Mosque, a few minutes by taxi or visitor bus, and some pilgrims walk along Quba Street as the Prophet used to come here on foot and riding. Combine it with nearby al-Jumu'a Mosque.
