Historic mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia
The Mosque of al-Ghamama, also known as Masjid al-Musalla, is one of the historic mosques of Madinah, about 500 metres west of Bab al-Salam, the Gate of Peace, of the Prophet's Mosque. It stands where the Prophet Muhammad led the people of Madinah in the Eid prayers; it was the last place he prayed the Eid prayer, in 631 CE, and here he also led the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus, the king of Abyssinia. The name al-Ghamama, "the cloud", recalls the tradition that a cloud shaded the Prophet as he prayed on this spot, and it is also related that he prayed here for rain. The mosque has been rebuilt several times over the centuries; the present building, with its white domes and dark basalt stone, dates from the Ottoman period and is among the most attractive of the city's small historic mosques. Prayers are still held here despite its closeness to the Prophet's Mosque, and it is an easy stop for visitors to the Haram, a few minutes' walk across the western courtyards.
The mosque is a short walk from the western courtyard of the Prophet's Mosque, so visit between prayers or after Fajr when it is cooler. It opens at prayer times, and the exterior photographs best before Maghrib. The historic mosques of Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khattab are close by, so combine all three in one short walk. Dress modestly and remove your shoes.
