District in Ad-Dawhah, Qatar
Al Najada is one of the oldest districts of Doha, just south of Souq Waqif, bordered by Barahat Al Jufairi to the south, Old Al Ghanim to the east and Al Jasrah to the north. Its name is thought to come from the people of Najd, home of its first residents, who settled here in the early days of modern Doha. Doha's rapid growth in the 1970s after independence led to its gradual decline, and many historic buildings were demolished. Some older villas and mosques that predate the 1970s still stand, documented by the Origins of Doha project, and Qatar Museums has worked to protect the district's architecture through its living heritage initiative. Some later buildings were deliberately designed with traditional Qatari features, such as arches, carved plaster and wooden doors, to keep the area's character. Walking its narrow lanes shows a different side of Doha from the glossy towers: corner grocers, inexpensive local restaurants, tailors and fabric shops, and everyday neighbourhood life, a natural extension of a visit to Souq Waqif.
Explore slowly on foot, in the morning or late afternoon, starting from the southern edge of Souq Waqif. It is residential, so respect residents' privacy, ask before photographing people, and dress modestly. The local restaurants are a good place for a simple meal away from the tourist spots.
