Egyptian National Military Museum
The Egyptian National Military Museum is the official museum of the Egyptian Army and Armed Forces, housed in the Harem Palace inside the Citadel of Salah al-Din in Cairo. It was founded in 1937 in the old Ministry of Defence building on Falaki Street, moved to temporary premises in Garden City in 1938, and officially opened at its present home in the Citadel in November 1949. It has been redeveloped several times: reopened on 26 July 1982, again on 26 April 1988 in cooperation with the Antiquities Organisation, redeveloped with North Korean assistance and reopened on 29 November 1993, and most recently refurbished in 2011 and 2020 before reopening on 21 October 2021. The galleries trace Egypt's military history from the pharaonic era to modern times, with a separate display for each war fought by modern Egypt, and contain weapons, uniforms, models, large paintings and battle dioramas. Aircraft, tanks, artillery and military vehicles stand in the open-air courtyard. The building itself, the Harem Palace that Muhammad Ali Pasha built for his family, is notable for its halls and decoration; Wikivoyage suggests the architecture may impress more than the exhibits. It is a good stop for families and children on a tour of the Citadel.
The museum is inside the Citadel and covered by the general Citadel ticket; allow about an hour within a full Citadel visit of around three hours. Go in the morning before the heat, as the outdoor displays are unshaded. Children enjoy seeing the tanks and aircraft up close. Photography may be restricted in some halls. Check current Citadel hours before visiting; the Muhammad Ali Mosque and the al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque inside the Citadel are convenient for prayer.
