Building in Egypt
El Sawy Culture Wheel (Sakiat al-Sawy) was the first private cultural centre in Egypt and remains the most active, a model for the independent cultural venues that grew up outside the state cultural sector. It sits beneath the 15 May Bridge in the Zamalek district on Gezira Island in central Cairo and is named after its founder and owner, Abdelmoniem El-Sawy. It is considered one of the most important cultural venues in the country, receiving more than 20,000 visitors a month. The centre has several indoor halls and an open-air stage on the bank of the Nile, with an almost daily programme of concerts by young Egyptian groups playing both Middle Eastern and Western music, alongside lectures and seminars, theatre, art exhibitions, workshops, poetry evenings and activities for children. It is a favourite place to discover Cairo's young arts scene and to meet young Egyptians in a family-friendly setting. Standing right by the Nile and close to the Opera House and the Cairo Tower, it makes a natural end to a day in Zamalek.
Check the events programme on El Sawy's website or social pages before going; most concerts are ticketed and prices vary by group. Evening events are the most frequent, and the riverside open-air stage is at its best in spring and autumn. A taxi to the foot of the 15 May Bridge in Zamalek is the easiest way to arrive, and the neighbourhood has plenty of cafes and restaurants. The atmosphere is family-friendly and suits teenagers and young adults.
