Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia
Al-Jumu'a Mosque, the Mosque of Friday, is a historic mosque in Madinah on the spot where the Prophet Muhammad led the first Friday prayer after his migration from Makkah. Arriving at Quba as an emigrant, the Prophet stayed there four days, then set out for Madinah on the morning of a Friday; the time of the Friday prayer overtook him among the homes of Banu Salim ibn Awf of the Ansar, so he stopped and prayed the Friday prayer with those who were with him, the first Jumu'a in Islam after the Hijra. The mosque carries several names that record its history: Masjid Bani Salim after the clan that lived here, Masjid al-Wadi for its position in the Ranuna valley, Masjid al-Qubayb after the locality, and Masjid Atika. It has been rebuilt more than once, and the present building is a modern, spacious mosque with a dome and minaret. It lies between Quba and the Prophet's Mosque on the route the Prophet took into the city, so a visit lets travellers follow his first steps in Madinah from Quba Mosque to the place of the first Friday prayer and on to the Prophet's Mosque.
Combine it with nearby Quba Mosque in a single outing, since both stand on the same Hijra route, and if your visit falls on a Friday it is a fitting place for the Friday prayer. It opens at prayer times and is a few minutes by taxi from the Prophet's Mosque. Dress modestly and remove your shoes; the surrounding area is a quiet residential district.
