Museum in Cairo, Egypt
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is a large museum in Fustat, Old Cairo, set on a 33.5-feddan site overlooking the natural lake of Ain al-Sira. It opened partially in 2017 and was officially inaugurated on 3 April 2021 with the transfer of 22 royal mummies, 18 kings and four queens, from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir in the spectacular Pharaohs' Golden Parade. The museum holds some 50,000 objects telling the story of Egyptian civilisation and of Egyptian achievement in every field of life from prehistory to the present day, spanning the Stone Age, pharaonic, Graeco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic and modern periods as well as the civilisation of Sudan, through antiquities, models, photographs, manuscripts, paintings and works of art. The display consists of a main hall presenting Egyptian culture chronologically with sections on Coptic and folk art, a textile hall, and, as the highlight, the underground Royal Mummies Hall, designed like a tomb, where the mummies of some of ancient Egypt's most famous rulers, including Ramesses II and Hatshepsut, rest in dim light befitting their dignity.
According to Wikivoyage (2026) the museum is open daily 9AM to 5PM, with tickets at LE550 for adults and LE300 for students. It is smaller than the Grand Egyptian Museum, so two hours is enough; save the mummies hall for last, and note that photography is not allowed inside it. Combine the visit with nearby Old Cairo, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As and the Babylon Fortress; a taxi is easiest, or walk about 20 minutes from Mar Girgis metro station. The building is family-friendly, with cafes and views over the lake.
