The Yivli Minaret Mosque, the Mosque of the Fluted Minaret, is Antalya's most famous landmark and architectural emblem, in Kaleici, the old town, on Cumhuriyet Street near Kalekapisi Square. It was built in 1230 under Seljuk rule, in the reign of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, and rebuilt in 1373 by the Hamidid dynasty, making it one of the oldest Islamic monuments in the city. Its celebrated minaret of red brick rises 38 metres, fluted into eight half-cylinders and still bearing traces of turquoise-blue tilework, and is visible from across the old town and the harbour. The prayer hall is a rare design crowned by six equal domes resting on twelve columns, some of them reused from earlier Roman and Byzantine buildings, one of the earliest multi-domed mosques in Anatolia. Around the mosque lies a historic complex of Seljuk and Ottoman madrasas, lodges and tombs, including a madrasa and shrine of the Mevlevi order. The mosque is still in use for prayer and is the natural starting point for a walk through Kaleici.
The mosque is open for the daily prayers and welcomes visitors outside them, with modest dress and shoes removed; cover-ups for women are provided at the entrance. The minaret photographs best from nearby Cumhuriyet Square or Kalekapisi Square in afternoon light. Combine it with the Clock Tower, Hadrian's Gate and the old harbour on a walking tour of Kaleici; there are many Turkish and halal restaurants around it.
