The Tekeli Mehmet Pasha Mosque is one of the principal Ottoman mosques of Antalya, in the old town of Kaleici a short way from the Clock Tower and the Yivli Minaret Mosque. It was built on the orders of the grand vizier Lala Mehmed Pasha and named in his honour, and dates from the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century; in the eighteenth century it was the main mosque of the city. The mosque is in the classical Ottoman style: a square prayer hall under a large central dome surrounded by smaller domes, an arcaded front porch and a single slender minaret. Inside, the walls carry Quranic inscriptions in fine calligraphy and tile panels, and the coloured windows give the interior a soft light; it has been restored several times while keeping its character. The mosque is still busy with worshippers and is one of the most attractive stops on a tour of Kaleici for anyone who wants to see an authentic Ottoman mosque in the heart of the old town.
The mosque is open for the daily prayers; visitors may enter outside them in modest dress with shoes removed, and cover-ups for women are provided. It is a few steps from the Clock Tower in Kalekapisi Square, so combine it with the Yivli Minaret Mosque and the old bazaar. Mid-morning or late afternoon is best, and avoid the Friday prayer if you are sightseeing. There are Turkish restaurants and well-known sweet shops around it.
