Trebenna was a city of ancient Lycia on its border with Pamphylia, at times ascribed to the latter region. Its ruins lie east of the modern town of Çağlarca in the Konyaaltı district of Antalya Province, 22 km west of Antalya in the mountains above the coast. There is no evidence of the city in the Hellenistic period; it is first mentioned in the Stadiasmus Patarensis, the Roman road monument of 45/46 AD under Claudius. Under Roman rule it belonged to the Lycian League, Gordian III granted it the right to mint coins, so the only coins found bear his image, and in 278/279 AD it was made a Roman colony under the governor Terentius Marcianus; in the Byzantine period it formed part of Pamphylia. The remains spread over a pine-covered hill: an acropolis on the northern section, an early Byzantine defensive wall surrounding the site, Roman baths unusually large for a small city (302 square metres inside), an early Byzantine basilica, a middle Byzantine church near the acropolis, scattered inscriptions and sarcophagi, and several necropoleis. The site was discovered by Count Karol Lanckoroński during his 1882 expedition to Lycia and published in 1892. Trebenna is undeveloped for tourism and little visited, attracting lovers of antiquity and nature walks, and lies close to the Geyikbayırı area famous for rock climbing.
The site is open and unfenced, with no facilities or tickets, so come by private car or taxi with a return arranged, wear sturdy walking shoes and bring water and a hat, since the ruins are scattered over a rough wooded hill. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; avoid summer midday. Combine it with a trip to Çağlarca village and the Geyikbayırı valley, and you can be back in Antalya within an hour.
