World's largest choreographed fountain system
The Dubai Fountain is the world's largest choreographed fountain, set on the 12-hectare artificial Burj Khalifa Lake at the heart of Downtown Dubai, between the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. It was designed by WET Design of California, the company behind the fountains of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, and built at a cost of AED 800 million (US$218 million). The fountain is about 275 metres long and shoots water as high as 150 metres, illuminated by 6,600 lights and 25 colour projectors, with the water dancing to music ranging from classical and contemporary Arabic songs to world music in shows of a few minutes each. The dancing water with the illuminated Burj Khalifa behind it is one of the signature night-time sights of Dubai. The shows are free to the public and can be watched from the lakeside promenade in front of the Dubai Mall and from the pedestrian bridge; short rides on traditional abra boats on the lake and a floating boardwalk offer a closer view.
Daytime shows are at 13:00 and 13:30, but the night shows are the best: every half hour from 18:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and until 23:00 at weekends (per Wikivoyage). Watching from the promenade is free; arrive a quarter of an hour early for a spot at the railing, as it gets very crowded, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings. The easiest access is through the Dubai Mall (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station). Lakeside restaurants need advance booking and most serve halal food.
