Shopping mall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The Dubai Mall is the largest shopping mall in the world by total area and the most visited shopping and entertainment destination anywhere, standing in Downtown Dubai beside the Burj Khalifa on the shore of the Dubai Fountain lake, as part of the Burj Khalifa development by Emaar. It opened on 4 November 2008 with about 635 retailers, the largest mall opening in retail history, and today holds more than 1,200 shops from every brand in the world; in 2012 alone it drew 65 million visitors. Beyond the shops it contains major attractions: the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, whose vast viewing panel can be seen free from the concourse, an Olympic-size ice rink, a huge cinema, an indoor children's play zone, the traditional-style Souk Al Bahar, the lakeside promenade from which the Dubai Fountain's night shows are watched, and the visitors' entrance to the Burj Khalifa observation deck on the lower ground floor. Its food courts are among the largest and most varied in Dubai. The mall is linked to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station by a long air-conditioned bridge, and it is the hub around which a visit to Downtown Dubai turns: shopping, the fountain and the Burj Khalifa in one place.
Open Sunday to Wednesday 10:00–23:00 and Thursday to Saturday 10:00–midnight (per Wikivoyage). The mall is enormous, so decide in advance what interests you, use its maps and agree a meeting point with your family. The metro is easier than the crowded car parks; the walkway from the station takes about 15 minutes. There are large prayer rooms for men and women and many halal restaurants. Weekday mornings are quietest; evenings are loveliest, with the fountain shows from the outdoor promenade.
