Artificial islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The Palm Islands are three artificial archipelagos off the coast of Dubai, each shaped like a date palm with fronds, trunk and a surrounding crescent: Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Islands (formerly Palm Deira) and Palm Jebel Ali. Developed by Nakheel Properties, their construction began in 2001 by reclaiming sand from the Gulf seabed and the first was completed around 2006–2007. They are among Dubai's best-known symbols and most photographed sights from the air, and their creation significantly affected sea sediments and marine wildlife in the area. Palm Jumeirah is the completed and most famous island, crowned at its apex by the huge Atlantis, The Palm resort, with villas along its fronds, residential towers and the Nakheel Mall along the trunk, and a chain of luxury resorts and hotels around the crescent. It has the densest collection of beach clubs and seaside restaurants in the city, and is best appreciated from The View observation deck at 240 metres in The Palm Tower or from the monorail that runs the length of the trunk. The development of the other two palms depends on the property market, but when complete Dubai will have the three largest artificial islands in the world along its shore.
The easiest way to see the Palm is the monorail from Palm Gateway station near the tram to Atlantis, or The View at The Palm Tower, booked in advance, to take in the whole palm shape. Most Palm beaches belong to hotels and beach clubs and charge a fee; the crescent boardwalk and The Pointe promenade facing Atlantis are free and good for families in the evening. Avoid weekend peaks; Nakheel Mall has prayer rooms and halal restaurants.
