Dubai Marina, or Marsa Dubai, is a modern district at the heart of what is called "new Dubai", built around a three-kilometre artificial canal along the Gulf shore between Jebel Ali Port and the area of Dubai Internet City, Media City and the American University in Dubai, at Interchange 5 of Sheikh Zayed Road. Its design was inspired by the Concord Pacific Place development on False Creek in Vancouver, Canada. More than 200 residential towers line the water, among them the famous twisting Cayan Tower; the district had over 70,000 residents in 2024 and will hold more than 120,000 when complete. The spine of the district is the Marina Walk, the promenade along the canal between the yachts and the restaurants and cafes, where families and young people gather in the evening, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Most restaurants serve Middle Eastern food and shisha alongside international chains, yacht and boat trips depart from the marina to explore the coast and the Palm, and the open JBR beach and The Walk promenade lie just beyond. The Marina remains one of the finest places in Dubai for an evening stroll between illuminated towers and water, and for viewing the modern skyline from an abra or the promenade. Because it is so close to the open sea, whales and sharks have on several occasions swum into its waters.
