Textile Souq of Dubai

The Dubai Textile Souk, also known as the Old Textile Souk, is a traditional market in the historic Bur Dubai quarter on the bank of Dubai Creek, facing the Spice Souk and Gold Souk of Deira on the opposite shore, to which it is linked by a short crossing on traditional abra boats. The souk runs along a wooden-roofed lane lined with small shops selling fabrics of every kind, from silk, linen and cotton to embroidered cloth, together with scarves, keffiyehs, abayas, ready-made clothing and souvenirs. Historically the souk was a hub of the textile trade in the Gulf, where people came to buy cloth for everyday wear and for special occasions. With Dubai's rapid transformation its commercial importance has faded and it has become more tourist-oriented, but it still keeps something of the spirit of the old Creek markets, with its shaded alleys and traders who call passers-by into their shops with enthusiasm. It stands a few steps from the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the Dubai Museum and the Grand Mosque, and from the abra station that links it to Deira, making it a natural stop on a tour of old Dubai.
