The Dubai Gold Souk is a traditional market in the Al Ras locality of Deira, at the heart of the old commercial district near the mouth of Dubai Creek, and one of the most famous gold markets in the world, part of Dubai's history since its beginnings as a trading centre. It has more than 380 shops, most of them jewellery traders, some four decades old and others new, selling gold, platinum and silver jewellery and bullion, as well as loose diamonds and coloured stones. Visitors are dazzled by the sheer quantity of gold in the windows along the covered walkway, with little visible security. Most of the gold is 22-carat and often remarkably finely worked; it is sold by weight at the daily gold price plus a "making charge" for the workmanship, and many shops belong to chains with branches in the malls, so they are generally reliable. The souk is bordered to the north by the Fish and Vegetable Market and the Deira Corniche near Baniyas Square, and across the Creek lies the Textile Souk of Bur Dubai. Dubai Municipality plans to renovate the souk and develop a wider Dubai Gold District around it as an upgraded tourist destination, while keeping its authentic trading character.
