Mosque in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The Iranian Mosque in Bur Dubai, also known as the Karashiya Hosainia or the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque after the Imam Ali Street on which it stands, is a Twelver Shia mosque and hosainia near the old Textile Souk in Bur Dubai. It was built in 1979 and founded by the Karashi community, who moved from the eastern shore of the Gulf and have long been settled in Dubai as merchants. The mosque is distinguished by its facade and dome, covered in Persian tiles in blue, turquoise and yellow with floral and geometric patterns and calligraphy, a striking contrast to Dubai's other, more plainly decorated mosques; for this reason it is one of the most photographed buildings in old Bur Dubai despite its small size. It lies at the heart of a walk through old Dubai between the Al Fahidi quarter, the Textile Souk and the Grand Mosque, and is best seen from the car park on the northern, Creek side of the street.
The mosque is an active place of worship and is not entered for sightseeing; admire the tiled facade and dome from outside, best from the car park on the Creek side north of the street, in morning or late-afternoon light. Avoid photographing during prayer times and religious gatherings out of respect for worshippers. Combine it with the Textile Souk, the Grand Mosque and the Al Fahidi quarter a few steps away.
