Mosque in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Jumeirah Mosque is among the best-known and most photographed mosques in Dubai, on Jumeirah Road in the Jumeirah district. Construction began in 1975 on the orders of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, as a gift to his son and heir Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, and the mosque opened in 1979. Built of white stone in a style combining Fatimid and Mamluk architecture, with a large dome, twin minarets and fine carved ornament, it covers about 3,000 square metres and holds some 1,200 to 1,500 worshippers; its image appears on the UAE's 500-dirham banknote, a mark of its standing. The mosque is overseen by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, whose motto is "Open doors, open minds", and it is one of the few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslims, through organised tours outside prayer times led by trained multilingual guides, followed by a question-and-answer session about Islam and Emirati culture with Arabic hospitality. The visitor programme has won an award of excellence from a leading global travel site. The complex also includes a small museum and a majlis, and the mosque looks its best in the evening when it is floodlit.
The mosque is open to Muslims at prayer times. Tours for non-Muslims are run by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 10:00 according to Wikivoyage, and may be more frequent today, so check the centre's website and book. Modest cover-ups are lent at the entrance and shoes are removed. The exterior photographs best at sunset and after dark with the lights on. Combine it with nearby Jumeirah Beach and the Majlis Ghorfat Umm Al Sheif; come by taxi or the Jumeirah Road bus.
